Almost one week elapsed since I received my Google I/O gift: the so-called “Nexus One”.
As any good geek, I already installed a couple of (not to say too much) applications to discover the droid world.
For the moment, I’m not a big fan of the Market application itself, because I found it to be not so handy to find application. Indeed, there are no sorting feature but only predefined sections, no auto-completion when you search an application by its name, the listing is not self-explaining (name+company but no quick descr). I hope these “small bugs” will be addressed soon…
Anyway, here is a quick short list of applications I installed during last week (and I intend to keep):
That’s only the beginning and I definitely could use some advice of other experimented droid users

When reading all the buzz about Google Buzz, I was shocked by some similarity between the buzz logo and some old “evil” company logo…
What do you think ?

Anyway, I’m still waiting for the buzz activation in my Gmail but I had some fun yesterday on the iPod touch. Looks like Google Buzz may overcome twitter, facebook and everything else by aggregating all the mess, fuzz, buzz in one “clean centralized place”.

I use Firefox as my main browser and as anyone I need a quick way to find webpages. Long ago, I used to have altavista, yahoo or google as homepage. So every time I launched my browser or open a tab, I could type in my search. BUT now I mainly use the Firefox address bar as search engine. And I mean the address bar not the search bar ! Why so ? Because it’s easier and it have a pretty convenient feature for lazy geek: the good enough automatic redirection. Let me explain Read the rest of this entry »

So I was trying to send a proper multi-recipient email from my Google Apps Gmail. All is configured to allow google to handle the mail (all the MX entries). I can succesfully send in and out mail “to:” my other addresses. And yes it’s really easy for people who want to have their own emails.
But here comes the BUG: on a google apps domain (not gmail), if you try to send an email with to: me@mydomain.com and bcc: allmyfriends@domains.com, the bcc adresses do not receive the mail !
I tried many times. From and to my usual gmail account, all is working perfectly. But using google apps gmail version (tried with 2 differente domains), I still cannot send email using the to/bcc mails to protect privacy (see gmail help).
I just filled the gmail support form, we’ll see how quickly google fixes that. (let’s hope I didn’t miss a small config step;)
UPDATE: still no answer from google, but it is not a bug, it’s a feature
The mail only arrived 18 hours later ! (of course I was not so patient and I sent it through my own mail server)

Hello ! I just wanted to share a video on CNBC – Mad Money where Jim Cramer interviewed Eric Schmidt (Google CEO) about how US could “change”. They also talk about creation of new white color jobs since the tech employees are also highly impacted by the recession.

Working for Google is often considered as The ultimate dream job for geeks and technos. Great pay, 20% free time for your “own” projects, full services including baby care, doctors, social security, … I probably forgot a lot of good reasons why Google is generating so much buzz around working inside the most secret company around. Yeah Google is hype but let’s face it, so far you could only see what PR let you see. I mean the videos are controlled, we are showed clean or almost commercial videos about how much fun is…work. I bet some of you already know by heart the “do no evil” motto and the 10 company values.
But you’ve got to be honest one second, no company is absolutely perfect. And along with the exceptionnal growth of Google, maintaining such values is really an hard (if not impossible) task in any company whatsoever. Not mentionning that Google is now in almost every single parcel of enterpreneurship. Every time you look around and try to build some new concept, you may face a huge Goliath (funny that starts with G too) already owning or launching a massive web application, that you can definitely not compete with in term of scalability or load or marketing resources. There is still a chance you can be David, but it’s becoming more slighter after each Google acquisition.
But with time and tough economic condition, it seems for the first time that some informations leaked out. I just read a couple of the answers to “Why Google Employees Quit“. This is really interesting, because IMHO it will help to figure out the real face of the G word. I even think that this more human presentation could really attract (more) people into working for Google, but this time for the right reasons and knowing what they are jumping into. Another aspect, one should monitor is how Google will handle this recession period in term of communication about layoffs: 30 000, 24 000, 20 000, … ? who relly knows how many people work in these undergrounds of search (see 10 000 layoffs and 6000 layoffs). So time will tell, if the “do no evil” can hold against rough conditions.
